Glenfield was one of the most rapidly developing areas in New Zealand in the early 1970s. Its population leapt from about 5,700 in 1961 to over 22,000 by 1971 as subdivisions spread after the Harbour Bridge opened, and Glenfield Mall arrived in December 1971 to anchor them. Those homes are now well over 50 years old, and many are still on their original roof.
That makes Glenfield one of the busiest areas on the North Shore for tile to metal and decramastic replacement. At a free on-site measure we look at the whole roof system, including underlay, battens and fixings, and give you an itemised written quote with clear options, whether you are in Marlborough or up near Glenfield Road.
Roofing Services in Glenfield
Every other roofing service we offer in Glenfield, and what each one covers:
- Re-Roofing: A full re-roof replaces your old roofing, underlay and flashings with a new COLORSTEEL roof built to today's Building Code.
- Roof Replacement: When repairs no longer make sense, we replace the roof completely and leave you with a roof that is good for decades.
- Tile to Metal Re-Roofing: Swapping heavy concrete tiles for lightweight steel removes weight from the frame and ends the cycle of cracked tiles and leaks.
- Asbestos Roof Replacement: Older Super Six and fibre cement roofs can contain asbestos.
- Decramastic Roof Replacement: Decramastic tiles lose their chip coating and rust from the inside.
- Roof Leak Repairs: We track a leak to its source, which is often nowhere near the stain on your ceiling, and fix the cause.
- Emergency Roof Repairs: Storm damage made safe fast, then repaired with the photos and reports your insurer needs.
- Tile Roof Repairs: Cracked and slipped tiles replaced, ridges rebedded and repointed, and leaks under tiles traced and sealed.
- Roof Flashing: Flashings around chimneys, skylights, walls and valleys cause most leaks.
- New Roofs: New roofs for new builds, extensions and minor dwellings, installed to plans and signed off for your Code Compliance Certificate.
- Metal Roofing: Longrun COLORSTEEL roofing in corrugate and trapezoidal profiles, rolled to length for your roof.
- Membrane Roofing: Flat and low-pitch roofs, decks and gutters waterproofed with butynol and modern membrane systems.

- Roof Washing: Moss, lichen and grime removed with the right treatment for your roof type, without damaging the surface.
- Roof Inspections: A detailed roof report with photos and honest repair or replace advice, for owners, buyers and insurers.

Glenfield Homes and Their Roofs
The post-bridge suburbs of the North Shore, Glenfield among them, have a high share of 1960s and 1970s homes with concrete tile or decramastic roofs, and those are the most common tile to metal conversions we see. Concrete tiles are heavy, and while the tiles last, the ridge bedding, fixings and underlay wear out. Decramastic is lightweight but loses its chip and rusts, and some older decramastic has tested positive for asbestos. Moving either to COLORSTEEL means fitting new purlins and fixing the structure for wind uplift.
What Glenfield Conditions Mean for Your Roof
Glenfield is mostly inland, so sea spray is less of a factor than on the East Coast Bays, although homes near the creeks such as Kaipātiki Creek should have their exposure zone checked. The suburb's higher ground, which reaches about 83 metres between Colin Wild Place and Chivalry Road, can be more exposed to wind, which affects fixings. The clay-heavy ground does not affect roofs directly, but established gardens on older sections still fill spouting and valleys.
Roofers Glenfield FAQs
Is my 1970s Glenfield roof concrete tile or decramastic?
Concrete tiles are thick and heavy, while decramastic is a pressed steel tile with a scalloped shape, a bitumen-based coating and a stone chip surface. We confirm at the free measure, and if it is decramastic we arrange an asbestos test before quoting removal.
Will my house need structural work to go from tile to steel?
Sometimes. A steel roof is much lighter, so uplift becomes the main concern, and resistance depends on the connections between framing, rafters or trusses and purlins. We check those in the roof space and include any upgrades in the quote.
Do I need building consent to change from tile to steel?
It depends on the house. Whether the change counts as comparable, and whether any structural work changes the answer, is assessed case by case. We check what applies to your home and explain it before you commit.
Can you just replace a few cracked tiles?
Yes. Many concrete tile profiles are no longer made, so we may source second-hand tiles of the same profile, or move sound tiles from a less visible part of the roof and fill those gaps with the closest match. We also check the underlay beneath for damage.
