Mt Roskill grew in two big steps. Private estates such as Victory Estate and Winstone Estate went up in the 1920s and 1930s, then large-scale state housing began in 1939, and by 1953 some 2,529 new houses had been built. The population jumped from about 7,000 in 1936 to over 25,000 by 1956 as the state houses filled.
Many of those homes are on old roofs or their first replacement. State houses here were built with a mix of tile and corrugated roofs, and some have already been converted from tile to metal. We quote after a free on-site measure, with an itemised written quote that shows the condition of what is underneath, whether you are off Dominion Road or below Puketāpapa.

Mt Roskill Homes and Their Roofs
Mt Roskill's state houses were built with a mix of tile and corrugated roofs, and the 1920s and 1930s homes on the private estates mostly carry corrugated iron or its longrun replacement. Many homes are now 70 to 100 years old. Concrete tile roofs of this age usually need ridge rebedding and new underlay, or a tile to metal conversion that takes weight off the frame. Old iron roofs fail at fixings, laps and flashings. Any home built or renovated before 2000 may have asbestos in roofing materials, so we test first.
What Mt Roskill Conditions Mean for Your Roof
Mt Roskill is inland, so sea spray is less of a factor than on the harbour edges, though we check each address. Floods in Wesley in 1948 and 1953 are a reminder that heavy rain is part of life near Oakley Creek, so spouting and downpipes need to be sized for short, intense storms and kept clear. Mature trees on older sections fill gutters and keep shaded roof faces mossy.
Roofers Mt Roskill FAQs
Is my Mt Roskill state house still on its original roof?
It may be. Some state houses here have been re-roofed or converted from tile to metal, others have not. We can usually tell from the material, the fixings and the underlay in the roof space, and we note it in your report.
What does a tile to metal re-roof involve?
We remove the tiles and battens, check the rafters, fix new purlins at the spacing longrun needs, lay new underlay and install the steel with fresh flashings and ridging. The structure is checked for wind uplift because the new roof is much lighter.
Does my spouting need upgrading?
Spouting is sized from the rainfall intensity for the site, the roof area draining to it and the number of downpipes. If yours overflows even when clear, it may be undersized for the roof, and we can resize it or add downpipes.
Can you replace a few broken tiles on my roof?
Yes. Many older concrete tile profiles are no longer made, so we may source second-hand tiles of the same profile, or move sound tiles from a less visible part of the roof. We check the underlay beneath any broken tile at the same time.
