A fair repair quote is specific. It names the problem, says how it will be fixed, lists the materials and shows the access cost as its own line. A vague quote with one round number is harder to compare, and it is also where reroof upsells tend to hide.
This guide is a repair price menu built from published NZ rates, with an honest look at the jobs that do not have a standard price and the point where repairing an old roof stops being good value.
How much do roofers charge per hour in NZ?
The September 2026 Made 4 Tradies roofer rates guide puts repair, maintenance and leak-tracing work at $70 to $110 an hour nationally and $85 to $120 an hour in Auckland. Call-out fees of $160 to $320 typically cover travel and the first hour on site.
Those are published third-party figures, not our prices, and they exclude materials. The table pulls together the figures that guide gives for repair work, so you can sense-check a quote line by line.
| Repair item | Published range (Made 4 Tradies, Sept 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Roofer labour, Auckland | $85 to $120 per hour | Materials extra |
| Call-out fee | $160 to $320 | Usually includes travel and first hour |
| Concrete or terracotta tile repairs | $65 to $95 per m2 | Includes ridge cap rebedding |
| Scaffolding or edge protection | $1,500 to $3,500+ per project | Height, perimeter, section slope |
| Two-storey or steep pitch | 15% to 25% extra labour | Slower, safer working |
| Full re-roof, Auckland (for comparison) | $95 to $150 per m2 | When repairs no longer add up |
How much does it cost to fix a roof leak?
A simple leak on an accessible single-storey roof, such as a lifted flashing or a few failed screws, is often found and fixed within the call-out and an hour or two of labour plus materials. Leaks that take longer to trace, or need a flashing remade, cost more because the time is in the diagnosis.
Water often runs along the underlay or a rafter before it shows, so the stain on the ceiling can be metres from the entry point. Paying for proper tracing is cheaper than paying twice for a patch in the wrong place. Our roof flashing repairs page covers the most common source: apron, barge and valley flashings that have lifted, cracked or rusted.
A useful test of any leak quote is whether it explains the cause. "Resealed around the chimney" is a patch. "Remade the apron flashing because the old one was lifted and short" is a repair. The second costs more on the day and usually less over the life of the roof.
How much does it cost to replace rusted roofing sheets?
Replacing a few rusted sheets is priced on the number and length of sheets, the steel profile and whether a matching profile and colour are still available. There is no reliable published per-sheet figure, so ask for the sheets, fixings and flashings to be listed separately.
Two warnings. First, new steel next to weathered steel will look brighter for a while, and older colours may only be a close match. Second, the NZ Metal Roof and Wall Cladding Code of Practice warns that some materials react with each other, so a patch in the wrong metal, or runoff from copper, can start new corrosion. If rust has spread across many sheets, the repair is often the first stage of a reroof.

How much does ridge rebedding cost on a tile roof?
Made 4 Tradies puts concrete or terracotta tile repairs, including ridge cap rebedding, at $65 to $95 per square metre. Rebedding means lifting the ridge caps, removing the old mortar and setting them on new bedding, then pointing the joints.
Ridges matter because loose caps let wind-driven rain in along the top of the roof and can be lifted in a storm. Many homes in Pakuranga were built in the 1970s and 80s, when concrete tile was a common choice, and those ridges are now well into their second or third decade. Our tile roof repairs in Pakuranga page covers what we usually find there.
How much does flat roof repair cost?
Flat and low-pitch roof repairs are priced on the area of membrane affected and the cause. A single split or lifted seam is a small patch. Ponding water, failed outlets or wet substrate usually mean a larger section has to be stripped and relaid.
Butynol and other membranes fail most often at outlets, upstands and joins, and a patch only works if the substrate under it is dry and sound. If the plywood has been wet for a long time, the honest answer is often a new membrane over new substrate. Our membrane roofing service covers both repairs and full replacement.
Do roof repairs need building consent?
Most do not. Schedule 1 of the Building Act exempts repair and maintenance with comparable materials, and replacing components with comparable ones in the same position.
The main exception is a roof that has failed early. Under the Building Code's durability clause B2, roof cladding needs a minimum life of 15 years, and the exemption does not cover replacing elements that have failed that requirement. Structural repairs can also change the answer, so a good roofer will flag consent before work starts, not after.
When is a roof not worth repairing?
A roof is usually not worth repairing when the problems are spread across the whole roof rather than in one place: rust through the sheets on several faces, brittle underlay, failing fixings everywhere, or tiles cracking faster than they can be replaced.
Access also tips the balance. On older villas in Devonport, narrow streets and tight sections make scaffolding a big part of any job, so paying for it twice for a repair now and a reroof soon after rarely makes sense. Mt Roskill's large stock of state houses, built from 1939 into the 1950s, is now more than 70 years old, so the repair or replace question comes up often there.
When repair costs climb towards a meaningful share of replacement, Cheeky's Roofers will price both so you can decide with the numbers in front of you. Start with our roof repairs page, or book a free inspection online and we will photograph what we find.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does insurance pay for roof repairs?
Sudden damage from a storm or falling tree is often covered by a house policy. Gradual wear, rust and long-term leaks usually are not. Photograph the damage, stop further water getting in, and contact your insurer before permanent repairs start.
Is a temporary roof repair worth paying for?
Yes, when it stops water damaging ceilings, insulation and wiring while a proper repair is arranged. Make sure the quote says it is temporary, so you know a permanent fix is still needed.
Should I get more than one roof repair quote?
For anything beyond a small fix, two or three itemised quotes are sensible. Compare what each one will actually do, not just the total, and ask how they found the cause of the problem.
How long do roof repairs take?
Many small repairs are done in a few hours on a single visit. Larger jobs that need materials ordered, matching tiles found or scaffolding set up can take a few days to schedule, and weather can add delays.
Can I walk on my roof to check it?
It is safer not to. Tiles crack underfoot, some older roofs contain brittle fibre cement, and falls from roofs cause serious injuries. Photos from a ladder at the edge or from the ground are a safer first check.
What does a roof repair quote usually leave out?
Common exclusions are scaffolding, rotten timber found once roofing is lifted, ceiling repairs inside and matching discontinued colours. Ask which of these are included, which are provisional sums and how any extra work found on the day will be approved and priced.
