Roof Painting Cost in NZ (and Is It Worth It?)

· 6 min read · Costs

Quick answerThere is no independent NZ price survey for roof painting, so the honest answer is that the price follows the roof's condition more than its size. Labour is the biggest cost: one NZ trade rates guide puts Auckland roofers at $85 to $120 an hour, with scaffolding or edge protection at $1,500 to $3,500 or more per project. Painting is worth it while the steel or tiles are sound; once rust has gone through, a re-roof is better value.

Most of the money in a roof repaint goes into preparation and access, not paint. A sound roof that only needs a wash and two topcoats is a short job. A roof with rust, loose fixings and cracked tiles needs days of repair and priming before any colour goes on, and that is where quotes spread apart.

This guide explains what pushes the price up or down, how a repaint compares with replacement, which paint systems suit NZ roofs and whether painting your own roof is a sensible idea.

How much does it cost to paint a roof in NZ?

A roof repaint is priced from the roof area, the preparation it needs and the access required, so two houses of the same size can be thousands of dollars apart. We could not find an independent NZ survey of roof painting prices, so treat any single per square metre figure you see online with caution and compare itemised quotes instead.

What we can point to are the published labour and access costs that sit underneath every quote. The table below uses the September 2026 roofer rates guide from Made 4 Tradies, an NZ trade web agency, for those parts of the job. Paint itself is the smaller line: Resene suggests estimating quantity from the house floor area plus about 40%, with trough-section roofing needing more.

At Cheeky's Roofers, our roof painting quotes list each of these as a separate line, so you can see where the money goes before you decide.

Is painting a roof a good idea?

Painting is a good idea when the roof underneath is still sound and the coating is simply worn out. Chalky, faded steel with only surface rust, or concrete tiles that are porous but not cracking, are the classic candidates.

It stops being money well spent once corrosion has gone through the steel, sheets are perforating at the laps, or the underlay and fixings are failing. Paint does not restore steel that has rusted through, and it does not fix leaks, which almost always come from flashings, fixings and laps. On a roof at that stage, painting only delays a re-roof and you pay for scaffolding twice.

A useful comparison: the same Made 4 Tradies guide puts Auckland re-roofing at $95 to $150 per square metre. If the repairs needed before painting start to approach a meaningful share of that, ask for both prices side by side. Our re-roofing cost guide explains what goes into the replacement figure.

How long does roof paint last?

How long a repaint lasts depends mostly on preparation, the paint system and how exposed the roof is, so there is no single figure that applies to every house. The manufacturer's data sheet for the system you choose is the right reference, and a painter should give it to you.

For context, factory-applied COLORSTEEL coatings carry paint warranties of 18 years in mild and moderate environments and 15 years in severe and harsher environments, according to the manufacturer. A site-applied repaint is a different product, but the same pattern holds: salt air and heavy sun shorten coating life.

That is why coastal homes behave differently. In Howick and along the Hibiscus Coast in Orewa, salt spray settles on roofs that sit close to the water, and sheltered areas that rain does not wash collect it. Regular washing after painting keeps the coating working longer. Our roof painting in Howick page covers that suburb in more detail.

What is the best roof paint in NZ?

The best roof paint is a full system made for your roof material, not a single tin. Resene describes a typical system as a wash, one coat of primer and two topcoats, and says priming gives the best protection even where a topcoat could go straight on.

Steel roofs need a primer that bonds to galvanised or Zincalume surfaces wherever the original coating has worn through. Concrete tiles need a system made for cementitious surfaces. If you collect drinking water from your roof, choose a system that is suitable for tank water and disconnect the downpipes until the first heavy showers have washed the new film, as Resene advises.

Colour matters too. Dark colours absorb more heat, which stresses the coating and warms the ceiling space. Heat-reflective versions of dark colours, such as Resene's CoolColour range, look the same but reflect more of the sun's energy.

Can you paint Colorsteel?

Yes, COLORSTEEL can be repainted once its factory coating has weathered. Resene's guidance is that new, unweathered COLORSTEEL should be lightly sanded or left to weather for at least a month before its roof paint goes on.

On an older roof the order is wash, treat any white rust, spot-prime bare areas, then topcoat. If the roof is still inside its manufacturer warranty, check with the manufacturer before painting, because a repaint can affect what the warranty covers. Choosing a colour is easier with our COLORSTEEL colour guide, since screens rarely show roof colours accurately.

Can I paint my own roof?

You can, but it is one of the riskier DIY jobs on a house, and the savings are smaller than they look once you add hire gear and safety equipment. The preparation is the skilled part, and it is also the part people rush.

Three things to check before you start:

  • Asbestos. Some older fibre cement and decramastic roofs contain it, and WorkSafe states that high-pressure water blasting must not be used on asbestos-containing roofing.
  • Access. A fall from a roof edge is the main risk, and WorkSafe's roof work guidance expects edge protection or scaffolding for this kind of job.
  • Weather. Paint needs dry conditions to cure between coats, which is harder to plan in Auckland's showery months than it sounds.

How often should a roof be repainted?

Repaint when the coating shows chalking, fading and bare patches, not on a fixed calendar. A roof that is washed regularly and checked every year or two will tell you when it is ready.

Homes in Glenfield and other suburbs built out in the 1960s and early 1970s often have original or second-generation roofs now reaching the paint or replace decision. On those houses we look closely at the laps, fixings and underlay first. If they are sound, a repaint makes sense. If not, Cheeky's Roofers will price the re-roof as well, so you can compare properly. You can book a free measure online and we will do both on the same visit.

Cleaning comes first either way. Our roof cleaning and moss treatment service is the first step of every repaint we do, and on a sound roof it can stretch the time between repaints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does painting a roof add value to a house?

A fresh roof coat improves street appeal and can help a sale, but buyers and building inspectors look past paint at rust, laps and flashings. Painting a sound roof is a reasonable pre-sale step. Painting over corrosion usually gets picked up in a building report and can hurt more than help.

What time of year is best for roof painting in Auckland?

Late spring through early autumn usually gives the longest dry spells and warmer roof temperatures for curing. Painters still work in winter on fine days, but rain delays are more likely, so allow flexibility in the timeline whatever month you book.

Do I need consent to paint my roof?

No. Painting is maintenance and does not need building consent. If repairs involve replacing large areas of roofing or structural timber, the consent rules for repair and replacement apply instead, so ask your roofer to confirm before work starts.

Can a roof be painted in a different colour?

Yes. A full paint system covers the old colour. Some subdivisions have covenants that control roof colours, so check your title before choosing something very different, and look at a physical sample outside in daylight.

Will painting stop my roof leaking?

Generally no. Leaks come from flashings, fixings, laps and penetrations. Those should be repaired during preparation. Paint alone is a coating, not a leak repair, so ask your painter what they will fix before the first coat goes on.
