A painted roof changes the look of a East Auckland home more than almost anything else for the cost. We help you choose a colour that suits the house and the street, and we check whether your roof's age and material make painting the right choice before we quote.
East Auckland roof painting from Pakuranga tile to coastal iron
East Auckland's roofs split roughly by age. Howick and Pakuranga have many homes from the 1950s to the 1970s with concrete tile, decramastic or corrugated iron. Botany and Flat Bush houses from the late 1990s and 2000s often have hip roofs in concrete or metal tile. Glen Innes has a large stock of state houses, some of them already re-roofed in steel. That spread means the paint system changes from street to street, from a coating made for cementitious tiles in Pakuranga to a steel primer on the iron roofs nearer the water.
Along the coastline at Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach, Cockle Bay and up the Tāmaki River, salt builds up under the eaves and around the gutters. On those homes more of the preparation time goes into washing and spot priming the sheltered areas. The peninsula is also open to wind off the Tāmaki Strait, so before painting we check the fixings and the ridge and barge flashings and replace any that are loose or rusted. Inland, older homes on reactive clay can show minor movement at flashings and wall junctions, which we repair before coating.
Decramastic needs a word of caution. Tiles that are losing their chip and rusting from within are usually past painting, and some older decramastic contains asbestos, so we test before any washing. On the Botany and Flat Bush homes, we look at parapets and enclosed gutters first, because paint on the roof planes will not cure a leak there.
Local tip: On a Pakuranga or Howick tile roof, have the cracked tiles and ridge bedding fixed in the same visit as the repaint, since a coating will not hold a loose ridge in place.
Roof Painting in East Auckland: Local Conditions
East Auckland has many 1960s and 1970s concrete tile roofs that can be cleaned, repaired and coated, as well as coastal iron roofs near the Tāmaki Strait that need careful rust treatment and primer before painting.

Suburban Howick and Pakuranga have many 1950s to 1970s homes built with concrete tile, decramastic or corrugated iron roofs. Botany and Flat Bush houses from the late 1990s and 2000s often have hip roofs in concrete or metal tile, sometimes combined with monolithic cladding, parapets and enclosed gutters. Roof Painting East Auckland FAQs
Can a Botany home with a metal tile roof be repainted?
Yes, metal tile can be repainted once its coating has weathered, using a primer that suits the steel and two roof topcoats. We check the parapets and enclosed gutters at the same time, because leaks on Botany homes of that age usually trace back to those details.
How long does roof painting take in East Auckland?
It depends on the roof size, condition and weather. Preparation and drying time between coats take longer than the painting itself, and we only paint in suitable conditions. We give you a planned timeframe in the quote.
What colours can I choose?
Roof paints come in a wide range of colours, including shades close to the standard COLORSTEEL range. Lighter colours reflect more heat, and darker ones absorb more. Always check a physical sample in daylight before deciding.
